Charlotte Ortegon Rees’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by her childhood in Cornwall, England, where jagged cliffs and wild ocean landscapes were surrounded by magical folklore and mystery. Stories of mermaids playing in the sea and piskies causing mischief on the land nurtured her imagination from an early age. Later, while living in China in her twenties, she developed a strong appreciation for Oriental art, particularly its ability to create an entire world through a single brushstroke. This experience led ink to become an essential element of her artistic process. Her work combines the bold, naive blocks of colour created with wax pastels with the delicate, fluid details of ink, creating a distinctive visual contrast. Situated between the whimsical and the naive, Ortegon Rees’s art captures a sense of joy, imagination, and playfulness, inviting viewers into a world of fantasy and uplifting emotion.
