Ian Middleton grew up in East Anglia and studied at Sheffield College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He worked with Eduardo Paolozzi before moving to the West Country. He has taught at several British art schools, including teaching sculpture at Farnham from 1988 to 2005. In 2013, he completed a Fellowship at Chelsea College of Art, and in 2014 he was elected an Academician at the Royal West of England Academy, where he served as a Council member for six years and on the Exhibition Committee for two years.

''My work often begins in response to world events and media images, it is not restrained by these starting points, while maintaining the intensity of its origins it's free to evolve independently. I often use 'found objects which may sometimes provide starting points or present themselves as the work develops: these are chosen for a particular' presence', association or familiarity. the work is assembled to create rhythms and interactions; juxtaposition and metaphor explore connections and moods.''
