John Panayiotou is a conceptual photographic artist whose experimental practice inhabits the psychological and ideological conditions that shape human identity. His images give form to what is felt but often unseen, through abstraction, figural dissolution, the destabilisation of symbolic structures, and motifs that echo throughout the work.
His practice moves between the internal and the external. The body under strain. The architecture of silence. The drift of dissociation. The emotional weight carried inside systems of power. Every subject becomes a psychological environment shaped by pressure, belief, and consequence. Nothing is literal. Everything is emotional.
Within this framework, the titles are extensions of the pieces, emotional ciphers drawing the viewer into their conceptual field.
Grounded in lived experience, Panayiotou’s work is shaped by years of professional engagement in mental health case management. More centrally, it is informed by a deeper concern with how systems of belief, power, and ideology shape the emotional architecture of the self.
His images are not illustrations of emotion but environments shaped by it. Through this, Panayiotou’s work unfolds as an ongoing meditation on the fractured state of the human condition, where absence becomes the truest expression of what remains.
Before turning to photography, Panayiotou worked professionally in the UK music industry, primarily within alternative music culture. His migration to Australia marked a shift toward visual experimentation and conceptual inquiry. His work has been exhibited at BMGART Gallery, Hughes Gallery, Black Diamond Gallery, Nexus Art Gallery, Gaff Gallery, Stiwdio Maelor, and Espionage Gallery.
