Marcel van Beek/ Minimalism

Marcel van Beek is a Leipzig-based German visual artist working with photography at the intersection of fine art, observation, and perceptual experiment. Educated at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences (BFA with distinction) and shaped by an early background in scenic design, he approaches the camera as a tool for staging, estranging and intensifying the visible. His images are built from surfaces, traces, reflections, condensation, stone, plants, water and concrete, using in-camera methods, tonal shifts, inversion, blur and close observation to reveal hidden graphic structures. Van Beek is especially drawn to thresholds where material reality begins to behave like abstraction: marks become maps, apertures become eyes, and architecture becomes a field of psychological tension. He has shown work at the German Federal Environment Agency, UFZ Helmholtz Centre, and Leipzig University. His photographs and artist publications are held in public and institutional collections and museum libraries internationally.
