Monica Miranda/ Abandoned

Monica Miranda’s work is an act of redemption and courage. Although her talent was recognised at an early age—winning prizes in art competitions in Madrid at the age of ten—her professional career was put on hold by the demands of family life, putting on hold a vocation that never faded. After overcoming a life-changing challenge such as cancer, Miranda finally decided to permit herself to embrace her true nature. This personal rebirth is the central theme underpinning her current practice: a conscious resistance to the acceleration and dehumanisation of the world. Through a deliberately slow and material-focused process, in which plaster and pure pigments are layered to evoke the reconstruction of the self, the artist champions the time taken by the process and the recovery of the human essence.
