Nigel Waters/ Water & Metaphors

Nigel Waters’ work is a vibrant exploration of landscape and seascape, abstracted through the lens of Abstract Expressionism and Fauvism. Drawing inspiration from the ever-changing power of the sea and the shifting moods of weather, he seeks to capture not simply a place, but an experience—one that reveals itself differently with every return to the shoreline.

Working on plein air, Nigel immerses himself fully in the environment, responding directly to the light, atmosphere, and elemental energy around him. While colour theory informs his decisions, intuition ultimately guides his hand. Each mark becomes a spontaneous reaction to the moment, shaped by wind, salt air, and the rhythm of the waves. His process is grounded in expressive, gestural mark-making, allowing each painting to evolve organically through layers of bold colour and dynamic form.

Influenced by the emotional immediacy of Abstract Expressionism and the vivid palettes of Fauvism, Nigel uses colour and texture to evoke the vitality and unpredictability of the sea. He aims to create work that invites viewers to feel the raw energy of nature and to experience the wonder of a landscape in constant flux.

Ultimately, his paintings celebrate movement, colour, and the transformative power of the natural world—each work a unique response to the landscape’s endless capacity for change.
