Sally Cleary/ Minimalism

Sally Cleary is an Australian professional artist with French nationality. Living in France since 2014 with over 30 years of experience.

‘’The different aspects of ecology, including human ecology and the impact of man's ecological footprint on the natural environment, have been the main themes of my artistic research since 2007. This research connects with my interest in reinterpreting the still life genre and mixed media installation art. My current compilation of minimal artworks in porcelain references the sea, where I live in close proximity, in the south of France. This series, Silent Sea, has been in progress since 2025, slowly evolving through the exploration of working with porcelain, its thinness, translucency, and workability. I am a curious explorer, always looking for new ways to create new sculptures and art forms. A previous sculpture installation, Biosphere, exhibited in 2025, inspired me to focus on creating artworks in multiples and to look at developing wall sculptures in porcelain. Light is also a feature of the work, as the translucency of the porcelain material allows for light to be transmitted, adding another layer of interest to the work. The whiteness of the material is a metaphor for life and death: the bleaching of coral due to high sea temperatures, and the fragility of life that lives below the surface. I am a minimalist sculptor at heart, searching for simplicity in forms so that the eye can linger on the small details, such as its underlying meaning, material, texture, variations in form, movement or stillness, light, and optical illusion.’’
