Yagmur Karaman/ Silenced

Yagmur Karaman is a London-based moving image artist and animator working across 2D animation, 3D, stop-motion, live action, and projection mapping. She graduated from the University of the Arts London with a BA in Animation. Her practice combines experimental techniques with social and political themes, including identity, feminism, consumerism, capitalism, displacement, and fascism. Throughout her career, she has contributed to commissioned short films, music videos, public projection installations, and collaborative exhibitions in the UK and internationally. Her work often brings together tactile materials and digital processes to create visually layered experiences that reflect personal stories in connection with wider social issues in contemporary society.

''I Loved School'' is an animated short film that serves as a reaction against women's rights violations in Turkey. The narrative revolves around a primary school girl who is taken out of school for an arranged marriage. During a class, the girl tries to raise her hand to speak, but her voice gets abruptly silenced, and then everything falls apart as if her childhood is over. The visual design reflects the surreal experience of a child being forced to conform to harsh societal gender roles at such a young age. Although the tactile boxes imprison the character and convey a darker narrative, the overall aesthetic remains bright and dreamlike, resembling a child's memory. This juxtaposition between the playful visual language and the oppressive subject matter highlights the loss of childhood and the harsh social reality of being denied a voice and an education.
