Ying Xing/ Everyday Objects

Ying Xing is an artist living in London. She studied Textile Design at Chelsea College of Arts and has worked across the arts and textile design. Colour is the centre of her practice. She is interested in how colours behave when she places and layers them against one another, and she treats colour and form as things that each carry a character of their own. What began as a study of colour has become a way of thinking about relationships. She looks at how one colour shifts beside the next. Behind this is a long interest in the psychology of colour, in the way particular colours hold particular feelings. Her work deals with identity and belonging, and with family. Through abstract shape and composition, she gives these bonds a form, and uses colour to hold what is otherwise hard to name: emotion, desire, the distance between where a person comes from and where they stand now.
