Matthew Hayward/ Black & White | Shades of Meaning

Matthew Hayward was educated at Oxford University and at West Surrey College of Art and Design. In the process, he studied History as well as painting and became increasingly aware of the unexpected connections between the two and how each can be enriched by the other. He has taught art, history and history of art and this has enriched and stimulated his own work, leading him to question ideas and working practices that otherwise he may have taken for granted.

He has exhibited widely and has been twice short-listed for the Natwest painting prize and was also twice featured in Art Review, when it was still edited by the controversial and forthright opponent of conceptual formulae, David Lee. He has also exhibited work in a group exhibition at the Palazzo Pisano-Revedin in Venice during the Biennale of 2024.
