Matthew Hayward was educated at Oxford University and West Surrey College of Art. In the process, he studied History as well as painting and became increasingly aware of the unexpected connections between the two and how each can be enriched by the other. He has taught art, history and the history of art and this has enriched and stimulated his own work, leading him to question ideas and working practices that otherwise he might have taken for granted. He has exhibited widely, including in a group show at the Palazzo Pisano-Revedin in Venice and was twice shortlisted for the prestigious NatWest bank painting prize. Since 2010, he has had to deal with the challenges of coping with multiple sclerosis.
