Mia Sage is an interdisciplinary artist currently studying Fine Art with Contemporary Cultural Theory at the University of Leeds. Working across drawing, sculpture, textiles, and mixed media, her practice embraces a diverse range of materials and processes to investigate themes of feminism, human emotion, and bereavement.
A significant body of her work explores the intersection of Greek mythology and feminism, re-examining the story of Medusa through a contemporary lens. Questioning traditional narratives that portray Medusa as a villain, Sage's research considers her instead as a victim of Poseidon and Athena, challenging the ways in which history and popular culture have shaped perceptions of female figures. This duality—between the courageous protector and the vulnerable young woman—forms the conceptual foundation of her large-scale drawing diptych.
Alongside this research, Sage has developed an ongoing life drawing practice that continues to deepen her understanding of the human figure. Through sustained observation, experimentation, and critical reflection, she has expanded both the flexibility of her drawing approach and her confidence as an artist, using the body as a powerful vehicle for exploring identity, vulnerability, and emotional experience.
