Sandra Mutukwa/ Art & Activism

Born in Wrocław, Poland, to a Polish Mother and Zambian Father, Sandra Mutukwa grew up in Liverpool, England, where she resides. Mutukwa explores the internal conflict of being a mixed-race immigrant in her practice through a multidisciplinary approach. Her work exhibits abstract themes to resolve this psychological struggle – envisioning dystopian worlds that combat the traditional sense of identity lost during relocation. Inquiring into her refusal of citizenship and the trauma of migrating during her early childhood years, Mutukwa predominantly utilizes oil painting and printmaking with textual components to disclose sentiments of a lack of identity. While acknowledging her multiracial ethnic background is the product of migration, she aims to bring awareness to her experience without demonizing immigration, instead holding the oppressors in positions of power accountable for insisting on harmful rhetoric within the media.
