Natalie Toplass/ Women Art

Natalie’s painting practice begins with an intense process of observation, allowing her to pinpoint the inspiration behind each study. She is particularly drawn to capturing the delicate intricacies of natural forms—such as petals or feathers—while revealing the inherent beauty within each subject. To emphasize this, she often places her subjects against simple, unobtrusive backgrounds, minimizing distractions and allowing their unique qualities to emerge.

Each subject presents a different character—offering delicacy and detail, yet also strength and vitality. These contrasts are what fascinate Natalie, and she strives to convey that essence in her work. While her paintings are clearly representational, she aims to draw the viewer into a more speculative experience of color and form. Her use of oil paint, built up in layers, creates a rich depth and intensity of color that heightens the sense of drama and whimsy.

Over time, Natalie has reflected deeply on the recurring themes in her work and has come to recognize the profound significance of nature in her practice. Through reassessing past paintings, it has become increasingly clear that the natural world—its diversity, tenacity, and fragility—is central to her artistic vision. Her work seeks to evoke a sense of wonder and delight, reminding viewers of their connection to something larger than themselves.
